Did you know that in Albany, as well as throughout Linn County, there are teenagers who live on the street, “surf” from couch to couch, sleep in cars, or who leave home for their own safety? These youth can end up cold, hungry and without a bed, struggling to manage schoolwork – if attending school at all – with no chance to acquire the important life skills that many teens IN safe homes have trouble learning. These youth truly want to feel safe and cared for, with stability and structure in their lives. They need help from caring adults to make progress toward positive goals and away from an uncertain future.

Too many teens in Linn County don’t have a safe place to sleep tonight. Albany House Youth Shelter will give these kids the help and support they need.
- Data show that 65 students in Albany schools last year were unaccompanied homeless minors who had been abandoned by parents, or had run away from home or foster care placement.
- Estimates suggest that there are at least 166 youth RIGHT NOW in this category across Linn County.
Jackson Street Youth Shelter, Inc (JSYSI) is partnering with local organizations – including the Linn County Commission on Children and Families, Linn-Benton-Lincoln Educational Services District, Albany Schools, Linn County Circuit Court and county Juvenile and Mental Health Departments – to establish a new youth shelter in Albany, Oregon. This new facility, called “Albany House” will address a need that has long been recognized in the county.
Jackson Street Youth Shelter is a private non-profit begun in 1999 by a grassroots effort and supported by community donations and government and private grants. JSYSI’s shelter in Corvallis currently serves both Benton AND Linn counties, but it is sometimes difficult for Linn County youth to take advantage of services located many miles away from school, family and friends. Albany House will bring these services directly to Linn County youth and families.
